The Gion Festival of Toyohashi have a proud history of more than 450 years with ceremonies and rituals, it is a festival three days, which takes place in the last week of the month July (Friday, Saturday and Sunday), when the rainy season ends.
A very famous festival, with a display of firecrackers, fireworks Tezutsu (hand fire), fireworks on the Toyogawa River with more than 12 explosions being one of the largest fireworks displays in the region, parades of the Yoritomo procession and the traditional Sasa Odori dance.
At the Toyohashi Gion Festival the procession is called the Yoritomo, formerly known as the Shishinosu procession that made its way through the Yatsuga-machi area and was known as Mikoshi Togyo.
Tezutsu fireworks and cannons at Yoshida Shrine
It is held on the last Friday of July from the 18hrs at the Yoshida Shrine, a neighborhood competition, featuring exhibits of fireworks cannons and hand fireworks called Tezutsu. The firing of the fireworks begins just before dark, with the fire cannon rituals, where one covers the cannon's mouth with one's body so that the sparks do not fall in while the ritual is performed. Then the Tezutsu fires (hand fires) begin, and it gets more and more beautiful with the small hand fires for a few breaks.
Toyogawa River Fireworks Burning
Held on the last Saturday of July from 19hrs, it is the famous fire-burning on the bank of the Toyogawa River, which makes the river a wonderful sight and leaves the brightly colored sky of Toyohashi City.
It is considered one of the largest fires in the region, with over 12 thousand explosions in the sky, including boat fireworks and water fires called KINGYO. This famous fireworks display attracts thousands of visitors each year. Fireworks start at 19 hours, but before sunset, some rare fireworks are launched.
Yoritomo Procession Parade
It is held on the last Sunday of July from 17 hrs, the last day of the festival, with a Yoritomo procession parade and the famous Sasa odori dance.
The Yoritomo Procession is accompanied by a dancer from the Higashi Mikawa region who is exclusive to Sakai Odori. Zen dance style is said to be from the 1680 decade. Dancers dressed in scarlet costumes form a group of three, one dancing with a drum and the other two with a small drum. And every year, on the eve of the festival (Thursday), beautiful children dance the famous Sasa Odori dance.
In addition, a boy named Yoritomo rides with a group of ten warlords.
