Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe confirmed this evening on the 24th that he had asked for a 1-year postponement of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo because of the coronavirus pandemic. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) accepted the demand.
Shinzo Abe's statement came after countries announced that they would not send their athletes to the Olympics. On Monday the 2rd, the Olympic committees in Canada and Australia had asked that the Olympics be postponed not only for the health of the athletes, but for the public health.
With the measure, the games that were scheduled for July 24 this year will be held in 2021.
