Japanese Monkeys

Japanese monkeys are known to demonstrate the behavior of washing sweet potatoes and other foods in the river, first immersing sweet potatoes in water and later rubbing them against rocks. The behavior can be repeated several times before the food is consumed.

The process of washing sweet potatoes was observed for the first time in a group of wild Japanese monkeys on the island of Koshima, Japan, and was considered to be pre-cultural behavior. Although the act of rubbing is quite common in monkeys, the behavior of rubbing objects in water, demonstrated by monkeys, is rare and interesting.

In the Monkey Valley this behavior can be easily observed during the feeding of the monkeys, which takes place from 15:30 to 16:00. Japanese primatologists worked together to help create the Japan Monkey Center. The center was founded on October 17, 1956. The JMC aims to promote research, education, conservation, well-being and communication to the general public, with regard to non-human primates. As of April 2014, the JMC has become a Public Interest Foundation.
