Wakayama-shi Wakayama City
Wakayama (和 歌 山 市) is the capital of the city of Wakayama, province of the Kansai region and divided in two by the Kinokawa River and is limited to the north by mountains from Osaka. Wakayama Prefecture is famous throughout Japan for its pickled salted plums (umeboshi) and tangerines (mikan).
In July 1945, the city of Wakayama was hit by a major air strike. Although post-war reconstruction was not easy, the terrain was reorganized and roads were built to gradually recover.
It has a total area of 209.20 km², with a population of 366.923 inhabitants, including about 3.646 foreign citizens, being 30 Brazilians, 68 Americans, 861 Chinese, 1.240 Koreans, 398 Vietnam, 283 Philippines, 26 Nepal, 90 Indonesia, 288 Thai and others (data January 2.020).
The city has a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers and cold winters. Temperatures are higher in August reaching around 38.5 ° C, and lower in January around -6 ° C.
