Hamamatsu (Hamamatsu city) is a Japanese city located in Shizuoka Prefecture, with a population of 804.968 inhabitants, including around 24.336 foreign citizens, being 1.725 Peruvians e 9.321 Brazilians, 320 Bolivians, 29 Argentines, 15 Mexicans, 153 Americans, 3.829 Philippines, 2.683 Chinese, 2.619 Vietnamese, 1.270 Koreans, 899 Indonesia, 314 India, 260 Nepal, 230 Thai, 89 Sri Lanka (data provided by the prefecture), considered the city with the highest concentration of Brazilians in Japan. The population of Nikkei foreigners grew after the change in the Japanese immigration law that allowed them to work in Japan. Since the 1990s the number of foreigners has grown a lot, but after 2008 the foreigner population fell dramatically due to the world crisis, with the Hamamatsu government having to offer help for some foreigners to return to their countries of origin.
Hamamatsu had almost 20 thousand Brazilians, 60% of them foreigners, where several Brazilian supermarkets and schools started to appear.
Hamamatsu has a humid subtropical climate with cold to mild winters and almost no snow, however, it winds a lot in the winter due to the dry monsoons called Enshū no Karakaze, something unique in the region. September it is the wettest month. Temperatures are higher in August, reaching about 39.5 ° C, and the lowest in January, reaching -6 ° C.
The city is an important industrial center, with headquarters for several companies such as Honda, Yamaha and Kawai Pianos, as well as several factories such as Sony and Panasonic. Hamamatsu is well known for automotive parts and musical instruments, among other things, that are produced here.
