Fujinomiya-shi (富士 宮 市)
Fujinomiya (Fujinomiya city) is a Japanese city located in Shizuoka Prefecture, on the southwestern slopes of Mount Fuji. The city grew up around the Fujinomiya Sengen Shrine, the sanctuary most prominent and important in the region, which is also the traditional starting point of Mount Fuji, as it is the shortest and most popular route to climb the Mount Fuji.
Fujinomiya received city status in June 1942 with the merger of the city of Omiya and the neighboring village of Fujioka. The city expanded by annexing the neighboring village of Fujine in 1955 and the villages Kitayama, Shiraito, Kamiide and Ueno in 1956. In March from 2010, the city of Shibakawa was incorporated into Fujinomiya.
